Pregnancy and Post-natal Care

We provide the Combined Care Scheme for antenatal patients.

Under the scheme your antenatal care is shared by GPs and the local obstetric team at the hospital. After your first visit to your GP to confirm the pregnancy the Combined Care Scheme is free of charge*. Please note however, that other visits unrelated to pregnancy will still incur the usual charge.

Your antenatal visits will alternate between the GPs and the hospital and become more frequent as the pregnancy progresses. The Combined Care Scheme also includes a 6 week check for mother and baby.

Ideally you should attend one of our doctors as soon as you discover you are pregnant so we can refer you for an early dating scan (carried out at around 11 weeks’ gestation).

*Please have your PPS number to hand for this first antenatal visit, as it is required for the HSE registration for this combined care scheme.

Cervical Screening (Smear Tests)

Free cervical smears are offered to women aged 25-60 years as part of the National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP). The programme issues letters of invitation (Cervical Check) to women in this age group and we strongly urge all of our patients to avail of the screening.

Cervical smears are done to screen for abnormal cells, which MAY, if not monitored and/or treated, progress over time, to cervical cancer. Screening programmes are carried out on patients who are well and have no symptoms (i.e. are asymptomatic).

If you have never had a smear before you can register by logging onto www.cervicalcheck.ie or alternatively you can phone the free number – 1800 45 45 55. Your usual personal details and PPS number will be required for registration.

Once you are registered with Cervical Check and have received a letter and CSP ID number from them advising you to attend for a smear, you can make an appointment with our Nurse. Please bring your bring your CSP ID number with you to your appointment.

VERY IMPORTANT: Please remember that it is very important that if you experience any abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting – for instance, between periods or after sex or after your menopause – that you make a doctor’s appointment for further assessment.

Please do not make an appointment for a cervical smear unless you have received an invitation letter from Cervical Check. If you have had a smear previously and are unsure when your next one is due, you can also log on and check with cervical check.

Menopause Care

We provide holistic care for women experiencing symptoms relating to menopause or who have concerns about their medical and psychological health at this time.

Most women go through their menopause from 48-52 years, but prior to their periods stopping indefinitely they may have several years of erratic periods and/or menopausal symptoms, notably sweats and flushes, which can negatively impact their quality of life, causing poor sleep and concentration.

There are often other stresses and events ongoing at this time, with family issues and maybe caring for elderly parents and the stress may compound menopausal symptoms, so effective management of these (including the use of HRT) can greatly improve a woman’s physical and psychological health and quality of life.

As part of menopause consultations, we provide advice on related issues, including osteoporosis prevention, continence problems, blood pressure checks and heart disease prevention.

There are two very informative websites that offer useful advice on the menopause:

www.menopausematters.co.uk and www.womens-health-concern.org
